How You Can Improve Your Vision as You Age

Sep 27, 2023

As one of the five major senses, sight is an amazing gift. Naturally, just like the rest of our body, our eyes lose clarity as we age. There are some measures like eating a healthy diet, considering surgery when needed, and taking measures to protect your eyes that will help you maintain your quality of vision for as long as possible.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Eating a diet low in fat and rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will help keep your eyes healthy. The same foods that help your heart help your eyes. Foods you should focus on are those that are rich with vitamin A, C, E, omega-3 fatty acids and zinc. A few examples with each of those important vitamins are carrots, sweet potatoes, and cantaloupe for vitamin A; oranges, lemons, bell peppers and tomatoes for vitamin C; avocados, almonds, and sunflower seeds for vitamin E. There are also concentrated vitamin, omega-3, zinc and lutein and zeaxanthin supplements available which will help give you the nutrients you need to benefit your vision.

Consider Surgery

Depending on your condition, your sight can be improved with eye surgery. Consult your physician for treatments available. When deciding the best course of action, keep in mind that eye surgery is a delicate process that takes time to recover from. Eye surgery can often lead to inflammation which requires care in the following days and weeks after. However, through surgery, your sight can be wholly or partially restored leading to a better quality of life.

Protect Your Eyes

Part of prolonging the health of your eyes includes protecting them. When outside, consider wearing sunglasses which can help shield you from the sun’s UV rays. Even on cloudy days, light can still penetrate and deteriorate the macula lutea of your eye. Being in front of screens is also harmful for your eyes. Wearing blue light glasses will help shield your eyes from the high-energy visible (HEV) light. Consistently wearing the proper eye protecting will save you from eye complications further down the road.

Taking steps to prolong your vision is a part of everyday life, it is easier to start early than start when you notice a decline. By eating healthy, seeing an eye-doctor regularly, considering surgery when necessary, and avoiding activities that strain your eyes, you will protect and prolong the health of your eyes.
